Scenic Devil’s Slide Re-opens

A scenic stretch of the California coast was reopened last month for all to enjoy. The remote and undeveloped land, known as Devil’s Slide, was recently given a $2-million makeover to accommodate visitors, who are now welcome to hike, bike, walk dogs or ride horses along the road and marvel at the San Mateo County coastal geography and ocean views.

San Mateo County Supervisor Don Horsley, whose district includes Devil’s Slide, called the cliff-side trail “breathtaking” and said that its location now offers Bay Area residents unique foot access.

The former highway opened with two 6-foot bike lanes in each direction and a 10-foot area alongside for walkers and horseback riders.  More information regarding the reopening of this scenic coastal area can be found here.

Parking is free. That’s right – FREE. The trail area is now a haven for nesting seabirds and peregrine falcons, a viewing site for seals and migrating whales and a lookout over undeveloped sweeping cliffs and crashing waves. When you go: Small parking lots are at the northern and southern ends of the trail, accessible via state Highway 1 on either side of the Tom Lantos Tunnels, beginning at 8 a.m.; closing times change seasonally. Another great resource for the Devil’s Slide Coast can be found on this website, which details geography, history, recreation as well as amps and directions.
