Meetup and Hike the Great Outdoors

Meetup! Summer is here and now is the time to get outdoors and enjoy all that the region has to offer. Meet a neighbor, bring a friend and find new ways to make lasting relationships through similar interests. If you find yourself short on ideas and looking for a little variety, don’t worry; we have compiled a local list of regional hiking groups, courtesy of Meetup, sure to be a hit with those yearning for a little outdoor adventure.

Let’s hike and maybe take a break if we get tired…
This group is for all ages and hike anywhere around the Bay Area and beyond, from San Francisco to Santa Barbara.

Most local hikes meet on the weekends and hikes are generally 6-8 miles in length with difficulty from easy to moderate. They are also plan longer hikes, from 10-15 miles, which will include backpacking, camping and more. They also encourage members to contribute social events for the group as well.

Sleep Late and Hike
If getting up bright and early to go hiking on a weekend is not your thing, this may be the group for you. Interested in spending more time on the weekends in nature? Want to explore more of the Bay Area? Are you an afternoon person? Like to walk at a moderate pace? If your answers were “Yes”, this may be the group for you!

Great for beginner or intermediate hikers, the group hosts a hike most Saturdays and Sundays. The hikes average about five miles, and some hikes are dog-friendly. The majority of hikes will be in the Bay Area within 90 minutes of Palo Alto in Santa Clara, San Mateo, Santa Cruz, Monterey and Marin counties, although some will be farther away, e.g., Yosemite and Lake Tahoe.

Great Hikes Plus One
Welcome to Great Hikes Plus One…Plus One activity that is! More than just a hike, the members of the group love hiking and combining an inspiring walk in the woods with something else to double the enjoyment. It could be a strenuous hike followed by a hearty meal at a local pub. Or a walk through giant redwoods followed by wine tasting and a picnic. Interested in a morning hike followed by a visit to a nearby art & wine festival or a quaint town’s artisanal shops?

The hikes can be anywhere from 7 to 14 miles and are medium- to fast-paced and can be anywhere in the South Bay and occasionally further south, north or east. (e.g., Pinnacles, Diablo, or Mt. Tam.) The group points out that they stop for all animals, periodic clothing breaks and junctions too, so that everyone has a chance to catch up.

Wherever your outdoor adventures may take you, remember to always be safe and hydrate.

San Mateo is a great place to meet people and connect. Meetup and Mosey are both good places to find groups with common interests and ideas for fun things to do. Another thing San Mateo is great for is food. San Mateo even won Rand McNally’s Best of the Road: Best Small Town for Food! Take a look at the Ramen Crawl we created on Mosey, which includes 8 delicious ramen restaurants. Mmm…
