On a Roll: Burger Roundup

The surrounding Bay Meadows community and San Mateo, in general, is blessed with an abundance of burger options. We wouldn’t dare try to rank or in any way judge all the juicy choices, but thought we’d list a few of them here. It seems there’s a burger for every occasion and mood:

Apple Fritter: The old Taco Bell at Fashion Island/South Norfolk has been reborn. Yes, there are lines out the door for breakfast, brunch and lunch. Yes, its eponymous Apple Fritter is the star. But, with nearly 20 different types of burgers – you’ve got to try one of them. Whether it’s the “Wild Thang,” “Dirty Harry,” or the “Gilroy” this place is too creative to pass up!

Jack’s Prime: Just a bike away from Bay Meadows, this favorite local business has over 1300 reviews on Yelp! It all starts with all-natural Niman Ranch beef. For the full experience, bring the kiddos and order shakes, too, for the whole family. Jack’s owner, Michael Mallie, got his chops in the kitchen at the much-praised Gotts Roadside in St Helena, Napa Valley and was hooked.

Jeffrey’s Hamburgers: In downtown San Mateo, the interior alone is reason to visit for lunch or dinner. Jeffrey’s has taken a page from the golden age of diners and soda fountains. The Pineapple Teriyaki burger, indeed, has a full pineapple slice atop the patty. And where can you find decent onion rings anymore? Answer: at Jeffrey’s!

Godfather’s Burger Lounge: Sure, this is outside of San Mateo proper, but Godfather’s is known for its artisan burgers, described as “gourmet American meets European elegance.” And it’s only a stop away on Caltrain. In Belmont, Godfather’s “artisan burgers,” are ½-pound sensations, fire grilled and served on a gourmet “la Boulanger” sesame seed, whole wheat or gluten-free bun. And who could resist garlic truffle fries?

Paul Martin’s Grill: Beyond a diner, Paul’s Martin’s in the Hillsdale Shopping Center is a full dining experience, serving an ever-changing menu of fresh, organic fare. Looking for a little elegance as you dine? And maybe you and your guest are interested in a top-tier selection of wines or even a cocktail with your gourmet burger? All this and more awaits you just a few minutes away from Bay Meadows!

Rave Burger: Well, they don’t call it “rave” for nothing. The Yelp reviews on this place are full of superlatives and rave reviews. This burger joint tends to stretch the definition of burger (“Mango Jerk Chicken ‘burger’”), but it’s all mouth-wateringly delicious. While Rave is open only during lunch and dinner hours, there’s always the option of breakfast-ing up your burger by simply putting an egg on it.
