Construction Update – Out and About

Everyone knows there are always new buildings arising at Bay Meadows – from homes to apartments to retail spots. But change is afoot in our greater neighborhood, as well. First – closer to home – installation of a centerpiece public artwork is underway in Bay Meadows’ Town Square.

We wanted to share these cool snaps of construction preparations for the playful, interactive sculpture “Mirror Labyrinth NY – for California” by celebrated Danish artist Jeppe Hein. The large-scale steel and aluminum reflective labyrinth will be opened to the public in early 2017. Read more about this cool artwork in our previous blog.

And not far from Bay Meadows, did you know that the Hillsdale Shopping Center is undergoing a massive transformation?

As we outlined in an earlier blog, this community institution is redeveloping 290,000 square feet into an outdoor plaza surrounded by new shops, restaurants and entertainment venues.

With construction well underway and the holiday shopping season approaching, Hillsdale shared with us some key milestones over the next few months:

Completed in November:
With the demolition of Sears and the old Food Court complete, debris and the original steel structure was removed, with significant portions of steel and concrete being recycled. This opens the way for new foundations to be set.

Excavation, underground and utilities work and steel bracing continue, creating a foundation for the North Block project.

December:
Construction work continues on the North Block structure, while the greater Hillsdale Shopping Center is still fully accessible for your shopping and dining enjoyment.

January:

  • 31st Avenue will close to automobile and pedestrian traffic through mid-year.
  • Construction will begin on a new traffic roundabout and a new 31st Avenue bridge.
  • The new Dining Terrace will be built during the first 6 months in 2017. Spring and Summer will usher in rapid growth of the new structures with facades expected to appear by Fall.
