2017 Goes Green and Bay Meadows Design Experts Weigh-in

Everyone will be going green in 2017! Pantone’s Color of the Year is ‘Greenery’ aka 15-0343.

Every year the Pantone Color Institute nominates a Color of the Year, forecasting which specific hue designers and consumers will all be using, wearing, and buying for the following year. The 2017 COTY is a fresh and zesty yellow-green shade that evokes the first days of spring when nature’s greens first arrive. Pantone says: “Satisfying our growing desire to rejuvenate and revitalize, ‘Greenery’ symbolizes the reconnection we seek with nature, one another and a larger purpose.”

‘Greenery’ gives you the opportunity to blur the lines where inside meets outdoors — whether it’s a space in your kitchen, office or any room that needs a spot of color and a little added green life. We love the idea of enjoying this vibrant pop of color through a terrarium, succulent bundles, living picture frames, indoor herb gardens or accents on furnishings, walls or around the dining table.

Hallie Mullen, partner of Mullen & Bergstrom, an Interior Design and Merchandising firm in the San Francisco Bay Area, did the model designs of Bay Meadows’ newest additions to the Bay Meadows Apartment Collection, Quimby and The Russell. Hallie chimed-in with a bit of advice on how to use ‘Greenery’, trends to watch for in 2017 and some hints at what you might discover at our two newest communities:

Hallie’s décor tip: Try pairing ‘Greenery’ with charcoal and ivory. ‘Greenery’ also works well in a natural palette with yellows and browns, or it can be used in a more playful palette with pinks and raspberries.

Green will be prevalent in 2017. We are currently working on a project using ivory and charcoal, paired with ‘Greenery’, the color of the year. However, some of our favorite color combinations for 2017 include different takes on green, including moss, olive and mustard.

Will we discover ‘Greenery’, Pantone’s Color of the Year, in any of the model homes?

While ‘Greenery’ hasn’t been used (specifically) in the model homes of The Russell or Quimby (other than living decor). The outdoor spaces are beautifully planned and provide a great amenity for residents. Rather than bring the outdoors-in, we’ve tried to create more sanctuary-like spaces in these models, luxurious spaces you’d hate to leave.

Kristina Cho and Stephanie Amend from BAR Architects, who completed the creative development for the interiors at Quimby and The Russell also weighed-in on ‘Greenery’ in the common spaces:

While “Greenery” was not included in the color palettes of The Russell or Quimby, you will find a lot of nature and landscaping accenting the architecture. At Quimby, the courtyard was designed as a “Secret Garden”, with lush planting and trees to create an intimate and romantic outdoor space. The Russell has an expansive outdoor area, complete with a pool, spa, petanque court, fire pits, bbq, large seating areas, and an abundance of planting and trees to break up the large area. You will not find a lack of greenery at either building.

Revive, restore and renew are the 3 R’s associated with color in 2017. How else does Quimby/The Russell reflect this mantra?

Restore is the word that we most associate with Quimby. Spa-like colors and soothing natural finishes have been used in the Quimby model to create a space to relax and restore, a place to get away from everything and unwind.

Revive is the word that we most associate with The Russell. Dark charcoal and bright whites were used in The Russell model and more eclectic art and accessories create a vibrant and invigorating space.

Which Bay Meadows Apartment Collection model speaks most to your personal design sensibility and why?

The Quimby apartment collection model most speaks to our personal design sensibility. We love to incorporate soft textiles, cool and soothing colors, and natural finishes into our designs. The spa-like, restful color scheme is a pleasure to work with.

Any other hot décor trends we should watch for in 2017?

More and more texture used in textiles and wall coverings is something to watch for in 2017. Designs are less ‘perfect’ than in the past. Design rules are much more blurred. If you have pieces that you love that you question may or may not coordinate well, give it a try.
