A Wholehearted Welcome to the Neighborhood

Hina came to chat with new neighbors. Karen came partly to learn about Instacart deliveries from Whole Foods. Josh and Hailey came for the sunshine and socializing. Mateo came for the smiles and waves.

And that’s how things rolled at Bay Meadows’ Block Party, hosted by Whole Foods Market San Mateo. It was one of those perfect afternoons in Persimmon Park where the temperature was just right, the breeze was gentle and neighbors formed new friends.

John and Waiming have lived in Landsdowne for nearly three years but they hadn’t been to many Bay Meadows’ social events. After attending the Block Party? “This is almost magical, really,” said Waiming. “We’re retired and get out and about a lot, taking Caltrain to San Francisco and traveling. But to be able to get to know our neighbors and enjoy our beautiful neighborhood together is pretty special.”

Many attendees were just hearing about the #HowIRoll social media contest where Bay Meadows gives away a PUBLIC Bike. The contest prompted some homeowners to discuss how they enjoy the PUBLIC Bikes they received as a welcome gift upon moving in.

“We bike everywhere. We love biking for recreation,” said John, who has lived in San Mateo now for nearly 30 years. “We no longer work, but we definitely wanted to move somewhere that was transit-friendly. We love taking Caltrain to the city and take the bus to SFO when we’re flying out of the region.”

Nearby resident Rob chimed in. He also loves biking and bikes to work everyday. “My ideal, though, would be to skateboard everyday to work. Now, that’s a pleasant commute!” Rob and his family moved into Brightside nearly two years ago. “This is an awesome event. We need to have more of these!”

In addition to the hot dogs and chicken skewers fired up on the grill, the pots de crème samples from local dessert maker Petit Pot were big hits. Thanks to Julie and her team from Whole Foods catering, each resident received a goodie bag filled with sample beauty and wellness products plus a $10.00 coupon. What’s not to love about a neighborhood block party?
