Engaging in the worlds of craft, art and design
There’s something fun percolating in San Francisco’s historic, industrial Dogpatch neighborhood. An inspired group has created The Workshop Residence, an artist studio with a residency program combined with a retail shop. And they’ll be in our backyard on July 19th, part of the GOOD Night Market at Bay Meadows’ “Movies in the Meadow” event.
The Workshop Residence engages the worlds of craft, art and design by pairing artists and designers with local fabricators to create beautiful, unusual but functional objects that also are affordable. Celebrating its third year as the first successful for profit of its kind, so many aspects of the Workshop Residence project are distinct. The artists and their stories, the retail store displaying the creative work and the fact that the artists have the ability to live in residence while creating.
The concept behind The Workshop Residence allows one artist residency at a time and alternates those selected both in the type of art they do, as well as where they’re from. “We alternate artists from all types of backgrounds, cities and countries,” says Katie McCracken, Program Coordinator.
Artists live in residence for anywhere from two weeks to two months. The retail store showcases the variety of products made by artists working in the studios and those who have lived at The Workshop Residence.
Bay Meadows visitors will have a chance to buy works from two of The Workshop Residence’s top artists at the upcoming GOOD Night Market: Lauren Dicioccio‘s popular Thank You Thank You tote bags -embroidered in red or blue on white taffeta and a friendly reminder to reuse and recycle. And Jim Isermann‘s utility blankets, inspired by the moving blanket and a series of 6 hand-sewn wall hangings made in the 1990’s.
We applaud The Workshop Residence for its pursuit of creativity and craft and its commitment to providing a platform for creators. So why don’t you swing by Movies in the Meadow on July 19th and be inspired yourself?
