Create a Community Event: Halloween

Connect with your Bay Meadows neighbors and friends by planning a community gathering this Halloween Be the person to organize an annual event in the neighborhood, with so many open-spaces to gather and create stronger connections with family and friends, Bay Meadows is inviting you to get creative. We’ve started the endless list of possibilities to build community in your Bay Meadows neighborhood:

The Great Pumpkin Potluck or Bake-Off. Pumpkin-spice Rice Crispies? Pumpkin Cinnamon Rolls, Pumpkin Croissants, Pumpkin Spice French Toast Sticks and Pumpkin Spice Hot Cocoa…? There are so many possible treats you can make with your family to share with neighbors as you boast your culinary prowess. Neighbors can sign up to enter the bake-off while others may sign up to judge the creations. Make it a brunch and pair the baked goods with piping hot coffee from Blue Bottle in Bay Meadows Town Square.

Witches Ride. Create an annual Halloween-themes bike ride! Don your favorite witchy attire, and join a large group of neighbors to ride your broomstick (bikes) down Delaware Street to throw candy to the little monsters (kids) along the posted route.

Zombie Crawl, Mummie March or Ghost Walk. Create an annual costume walk! Get out the makeup and get creative, join a large group of neighbors in a slow-mo crawl down Delaware Street to throw candy to the little monsters (kids) along the posted route.

Spooktacular Stoops. Decorate your stoop with your spookiest and most creative Halloween décor. Impress your neighbors and make us all shriek with delight! Select an annual winner to receive a gift card to Humphry Slocombe or ROAM Burgers San Mateo in Town Square.

Howl O Ween Howl. Canines in costume always steal the show. Re-launch Bay Meadows annual pet parade. Gather in Landing Green park with our pooch for treats and let them march in costume in their own Pet Parade for the neighborhood to watch competing to be the Top Dawg. Be sure to line up some special treats from local pet-service providers (pet-sitters, dog walkers, groomers, photographers and more) as prizes!

Spooktacular Screening. Create a pop-up movie night in one of our neighborhood parks for one night (permitted through the City of San Mateo). Show a screening of a kid-friendly film at dusk, followed by a second screening of a Halloween classic for adults after the wee-ones head home. Make it more fun with face-painters, hoola hoops, corn-hole and a concession stand with Halloween themed treats like gummy worms and gummy spiders, plus seasonal punch. Pick 5 flavors to create a sweet and savory Pop-up Popcorn Bar!

Pop-up Pumpkin Patch. Bring them home! Task a group of neighbors to purchase an array of pumpkins and gourds for an annual patch in the neighborhood. Allow the littles to go hunt for “their” favorite pumpkin close to home. Bring on the bales of hay, some fun tunes, classic fall punch and you have a party. Add a long table and some chairs + paint and glitter and you have the perfect carve-free pumpkin party with neighbors. Don’t forget to order from the Autumn Menu at ROAM San Mateo to feed all your hungry goblins!

Costume Party. Extend the parade into a party with spooky bites, music, Halloween decorations, spirited cocktails and more!

Pumpkin Carving or Painting Party. This can be as simple as BYOP. Get crafty with paint, glitter, or carving supplies + turn up the tunes. You can bump up the fun by turning the event into a live pumpkin carving contest with simple prizes or ribbons. Afterwards neighbors can gather at Fieldwork Brewing San Mateo Beer Garden around the firepits and play some bocce.

Hand Crafted Candy Apples. Line up the apples and all the fixings, join neighbors in the outdoors at a long table to dip and roll some custom candy apples to take home. From white chocolate “ghosts” to traditional caramel and cinnamon candy to all the sprinkles, shavings and candied or crumble dips you can imagine, no two apples will be just alike.

Community is a two-way conversation, a living, breathing thing. Get to know your neighbors and create community connections with small steps. Even if you’ve lived in your Bay Meadows home for a while, it’s easy to reach out to neighbors by giving a smile and saying, “Hey, I’ve been meaning to introduce myself.” Simply saying hello with a warm smile could be the random act of kindness your neighbor needs to feel at home.
