Get Cookin’ San Mateo
A new culinary compound has been born in San Mateo. KitchenTown is an industrial kitchen, a co-op, plus a gourmet store and hip café. The KitchenTown location was once exclusively home to Anna’s Cookies, a Danish butter cookie company that’s been around since 1938. Anna’s was looking to sell the business and the 11,000-square foot warehouse just as entrepreneur Rusty Schwartz and his friend, Alberto Solis, an importer of gourmet Spanish foods were looking to dive into a new culinary endeavor.
A delicious new opportunity was born. Not only have the co-founders kept the iconic cookie company going, but they’ve transformed the former production facility into a new mixed-used space, adding all manner of industrial cooking equipment to help nurture and support local artisans scale up their business. This culinary accelerator is now is home to 18 local artisan food producers, including Mammoth Energy Bars, Zepeda Salsa, Three Trees almond milk, Debbie’s Rugelach, Slow Girl Foods, and the continues to house scrumptious Anna’s Cookies. Half of the warehouse is devoted to dry goods and refrigeration storage with a temperature-controlled chocolate-making room.

The modern cafe is the new face of the building and redefines the term open kitchen with floor-to-ceiling glass doors. Stop by the café for on-site fresh-baked pastries, cookies and coffee, and recently launched lunch with sandwiches and salads. Take a peek at the sample menu here.
