Get a slice of the San Mateo Sandwich Scene
The San Mateo sandwich scene gets stronger as heavyweight Ike’s Place adds muscle to Third Avenue on the eastern edge of downtown San Mateo. Current contenders in the area include: The Ravioli House, The Sandwich Spot and Mr. Pickle’s. Here are a few of our favorite creations in the sandwich scene:
Ike’s Place offers 300 sandwiches smeared with its dirty secret sauce and topped with everything from mozzarella sticks to halal chicken and gluten free to vegan options. The man behind the sandwich, Ike Shehadeh, always puts his customer’s happiness first, which sets Ike’s Place aside from the rest. The bread is baked fresh to order and their soon to be patented “Ike’s Dirty Secret Sauce” is spread on every sandwich and baked right in the bread, and another layer is spread on afterwards to give it that extra flavor.
The menu at Ike’s is entertaining with all the creative names from the Al Bundy and Captain Kirk to Pastrami-Charmed Life and Sometimes I’m a Vegetarian. Yelp reviews point to the Menage A Trois sandwich with BBQ, Cheddar, Halal Chicken, Honey Mustard, Pepper Jack, Real Honey and Swiss on Dutch crunch.
The Pulled Pork sandwich from The Ravioli House Deli and Catering is a fan favorite, with pork shoulder smoked over mesquite with apple wood right out back, served on a toasted roll with their own coleslaw and Carolina BBQ sauce. Pair with some delicious raviolis and you are set!
The Central Park Heat from The Sandwich Spot includes Turkey, Avocado, Bomb Sauce & Cream Cheese. This full service deli offers specialty sandwiches, made to order sandwiches, salads, one-of-a-kind selection of sauces and more.
The Padre Pride from Mr. Pickle’s Sandwich Shop, with chicken breast, bacon, avocado & jack cheese on sourdough will satisfy your palette. They serve sandwiches on a variety of delicious European style hearth breads (freshly baked every morning in brick ovens) mounted with generous portions of high-quality meats and tailored to your choice of amenities. You can choose from a list of tried and true favorites or build your own. Don’t forget to ask for a touch of our secret G-sauce!
