Bay Meadows

Coming soon to the Bay Meadows Town Square is a bold, playful and interactive sculpture from one of the world’s top emerging artists. This is most definitely art that kids can touch and everyone can get lost in.

Fresh from a NY Times-praised exhibit in Brooklyn, “Mirror Labyrinth NY – for California” by celebrated Danish artist Jeppe Hein will grace our vibrant plaza. The large-scale steel and aluminum reflective labyrinth will be installed later this year.

Hein’s recent project, “Please Touch the Art” in Brooklyn Bridge Park, featured this sculpture, which was a favorite with both participants and art critics alike and was immediately a hit on Instagram.

Made of vertical planks of different heights, “Mirror Labyrinth NY – for California” is three arcs that together create a pathway to walk through, its surfaces mirroring the surrounding landscape.

Stockbridge Capital, Wilson Meany and the City of San Mateo are thrilled with acquiring this innovative work for the public. This piece for the heart of Bay Meadows’ social hub offers thousands of visitors an opportunity to relate to place and interact with a beautiful structure in fresh and unexpected ways.

Chris Meany, partner with Bay Meadows’ developer Wilson Meany noted, “Bay Meadows is a new imagining of an urban village– a classical style of living made relevant for today. ’Mirror Labyrinth NY – for California’ is an expression of that same reality—a classic form reimagined for today’s world.”

The acquisition represents the third and final work of public art to be installed at Bay Meadows. Last spring, “San Mateo Bridge,” a sculpture by renowned sculptor Charles Ginnever, was installed in Landing Green Park. Bay Meadows is also home to wood sculptures by regional artist Evan Shively.

“The City of San Mateo is very proud to welcome this work by a prominent international artist into the City’s growing collection of public art. ’Mirror Labyrinth NY – for California’ is both monumental and people friendly,” said Jack Matthews, chair of San Mateo’s Civic Arts Committee.

Featuring best-in-class retailers such as Tin Pot Creamery and Blue Bottle Coffee, Bay Meadows’ Town Square is shaping up to be the ideal gathering place with more groundfloor retail, outdoor dining and pop-ups to come. Soon home to a stunning new sculpture from internationally-renowned artist Jeppe Hein, the Town Square will be the dynamic core of our urban village. With Caltrain electrification to start in 2017, the platform will be elevated and grade separations will be installed on 31^st and 28^th Avenues, making the Town Square the perfect place to relax outside for a glass of wine or an ice cream after a day of shopping and entertainment at Hillsdale Center.
