Online shopping is definitely changing the way we purchase items putting pressure on existing malls to create an inviting and social setting so shoppers can experience it all.  Our neighbor, Hillsdale Shopping Center, is leading the way with new and inventive ways to create a greater shopping experience and dreaming up ways for greater community connections among neighbors. No longer a mall, rather a destination, it’s wonderful to have a shopping, dining and entertainment venue such as Hillsdale just a short walk from your home at Bay Meadows.

“We seriously looked at the changes that were happening in the marketplace a few years ago, and realized we had to keep up with the trends and what shoppers want,” said Christine Kupczak, marketing director at Hillsdale. Amazon became a formidable online competitor and people’s shopping behaviors changed, she noted.

Experiences are important and the article gave some insight as to the changes shoppers may see at Hillsdale Shopping Center:

Kupczak said the mall is also looking into lining up events like concerts and comedy shows in its renovated section this summer. The space includes an elevated dining terrace that functions as a food court and can also be used by people working on laptops.

Shoppers are even being asked to contribute to the conversation regarding what they would like to see in the future:

Ideas about what to do with that part of the mall are being mulled, with management putting up an “Idea Store” seeking input from shoppers. Housing, cultural events, transit access and public spaces are some of the things shoppers have said are important to them.
