Magic happens at the end of a kite string. As you launch your kite and it lifts straight up, your heart leaps with it. San Mateo County has an enormous amount of beautiful open space and more nice beaches than most places along the California coast, and many are lightly visited with runners, beach combers, dog walkers, surfers — and of course kite fliers. Flying a kite is great fun on a windy day and a great way to unwind on your weekends. Take advantage of the next breezy day, grab your picnic basket, blanket and kite, and get ready to have your spirits soaring high as you take it for a spin at one of these local hot spots:

Bay Meadows Park, San Mateo
If you’re looking for some high flying entertainment, head on over to the Bay Meadows Park for some swooping and dive bombing kites soaring gracefully in sky. Even beginners will appreciate the open space to launch your kite. The beautiful weather in the park makes it perfect to pack a picnic to snack on in between your kite flying sessions, soccer game, bike ride, or run with the dog. Bring a blanket and spend the day close to home enjoying the outdoors.

Coyote Point Recreation Area
With easy beach access, Coyote Point is a regional recreation area that provides a wide variety of opportunities: picnicking, swimming, windsurfing, bicycling, jogging, fishing, boating, and sailing. Stroll along the beach promenade, visit the marina and its breakwater, or explore the saltwater marsh. Don’t miss the Annual Coyote Point Kite Festival which celebrated it’s 3rd year in 2019! 

Shoreline Park, Mountain View
This 750-acre park has everything from a dog run to water sports to a wildlife sanctuary and of course, kite flying. With steady winds, Shoreline Park is a popular launching spot on weekends, and the many exotic and colorful kites in the air are always fun to see. The little ones will love the choice to alternate between kite flying, feeding the geese, watching the sailboats on the lake, and clambering aboard the ship-shaped playground.

Baylands Park, Sunnyvale
Kite festivals and competitions are not uncommon in the large grassy field at Baylands Park. The large grassy field is perfect for kite flying, volleyball, and frisbee tossing. The picnic areas are well maintained and there are also lots of grassy knolls that are perfect for picnic baskets and blankets. When you’ve packed up your kite, don’t forget to stop by the Discovery Play Area; your little explorers will love climbing through the modern-style play structure, following dinosaur tracks, and finding fossils scattered throughout.

Half Moon Bay State Park, Half Moon Bay
With its smooth winds and wide open spaces, Half Moon Bay is the perfect place to fly a kite. Four miles of broad and sandy beach stretch out to welcome visitors, featuring campground facilities and trails for hikers and horseback riders. This picturesque setting is ideal for sunbathing, fishing and picnicking. When they’re not wrestling with the kite strings, kids young and old will enjoy building sandcastles and tossing the frisbee.
