Help us welcome Clayroom San Mateo to the Bay Meadows neighborhood! At long last, the amenity everyone has been longing for has arrived at our doorstep. Clayroom is not just a space to hone your craft, this community builder is an outlet for all to learn, share and explore the medium of ceramics, create conversations, build friendships and healthy bonds. Whether you live in one of our new homes or within the Apartment Collection at Bay Meadows, this neighbor adds to your well-balanced life along the San Francisco Peninsula. Located in STA 4, a gorgeous  ~4,000 sq. ft. open-plan space invites you to find your flow. The new community pottery studio, located at 3050 South Delaware Street under Survey Monkey’s HQ, features soaring ~17′ floor to ceiling windows across most of the space bringing ample natural light and an open feeling while working. Did we mention? Like so many of our neighborhood spots, Clayroom San Mateo is dog-friendly! 

​The studio is open for memberships, adult and kids classes in wheel-throwing, hand-building and slip-casting. If you have some level of wheel-throwing, hand-building, and/or slip-casting and are committed to using the space 2-3x per week, consider convenient Clayroom Membership mere steps from your home at Bay Meadows where you’ll have unlimited access between the hours of 10am and 9pm, 7 days a week. Membership includes a shelf space as well as access to 20+ brand new Shimpo Whisper wheels, a slab roller, extruder, 15 unique glazes, and weekly specialized classes for members only known as the “power hour” classes. 

Catch a class! Whether you are a beginner or at the intermediate level, there’s a 6 week class waiting for you. Clayroom San Mateo even caters to the kids with a 6-week beginner course for ages 6-10. And if you just want to get your hands dirty and try a little wheel throwing, there’s a one-day class for that too.

The Family is Growing:

Behind the scenes, the team has been hard at work testing a brand new selection of glazes for Clayroom San Mateo! Head of the Studio @kelseysegasser and Assistant Studio Manager @mittlceramics have a beautiful new collection of colors and finishes to share with you.

Alissa Mittl is the San Mateo Assistant Studio Manager and sgraffito specialist. Alissa’s work is inspired by folk artists of the American southwest and expressionist painters including Kirchner, Matisse, and Gauguin, her work interprets local flora and fauna in a unique, rhythmic style.

Ilke Kalcioglu will be teaching the Tuesday morning Intro to Clay class. “I am originally from Turkey and have a background in Materials Science. I got hooked on working with clay ever since I took my first class in 2014. I enjoy exploring different techniques to make new pieces, and one of my personal favorites has been marbling different colors of clay. I enjoy creating both minimalistic/modern style pots, as well as colorful and cheerful ones.”

Loraine Koury, @lokopots, will be teaching Next Step Wheel Tuesday evenings. “I love sharing the joy I get from working with clay. To see that lightbulb go on with a student is so rewarding and gratifying. Clay is a practice to be nurtured and grown within community, and I’m excited to meet new students!”

Isabella Comai is the San Mateo Studio Tech and Instructor for Functional Handbuilding. Isabella fell in love with clay in 2016 and has been obsessed ever since. She has a BA concentrating in ceramic sculpture from Alfred University and is currently living and making art in Foster City CA. In her class she will teach students how to approach and plan sets, larger pots and vessels, and various surface design techniques
