San Mateo, CA – May 17, 2016 – The thousands of residents, workers and visitors to Bay Meadows in San Mateo will soon be able to enjoy cups of delicious, expertly sourced coffee and scoops of handcrafted ice cream at the growing urban village. Owner Stockbridge Capital and developer Wilson Meany announced that Blue Bottle Coffee and Tin Pot Creamery will join the 83-acre mixed-use development, signifying Bay Meadows’ next chapter as the bustling neighborhood builds out. The two Bay Area-bred businesses will occupy shops on Bay Meadows’ Town Square, with plans to open in early 2017.
“For Tin Pot Creamery to be in a community designed by the team behind the Ferry Building was an amazing opportunity,” said Becky Sunseri, owner of Tin Pot Creamery, which has existing locations in Palo Alto and Los Altos. “Plus we’ve had a wonderful relationship with SurveyMonkey and can’t wait to see them and meet lots of new folks in our scoop shop at Bay Meadows.”
In addition to the Town Square, a series of landscaped pop-up spaces will fill Delaware Street, the neighborhood’s “social street,” featuring park-like environments with unique programming opportunities. The neighborhood will offer the Peninsula’s newest streetfront retail, carefully designed for a walkable and inviting experience.
“We believe that each of our cafes must be both a unique representation of our craft and a respectful tribute to the community in which it is located,” said Arion Paylo, Director of Retail Development at Blue Bottle Coffee. “Our Bay Meadows café is no different, and we plan to fully utilize the thoughtfully designed outdoor space and bring delicious coffee and food to the neighborhood.”
San Francisco-based Wilson Meany is a recognized leader in creating communities and projects that embrace and enhance their surroundings. Among the company’s most notable achievements is redevelopment of San Francisco’s Ferry Building. Similar to that landmark project, Bay Meadows’ design is intrinsic to its unique location. According to RetailWest, tenants are attracted to Bay Meadows not only for the site’s demographics, but also for its proximity to Caltrain and its spacious outdoor environments that capitalize on San Mateo’s sunny climate.
“Blue Bottle Coffee and Tin Pot Creamery, each with very dedicated followings, speak to the kind of neighborhood-serving tenants we’ll continue bringing to Bay Meadows,” said Janice Thacher, partner at Wilson Meany. “It’s a welcoming environment we’re creating for retail in the heart of the community, with a blend of indoor and outdoor spaces.”
The opening for Bay Meadows’ retail is planned in conjunction with occupancy of SurveyMonkey’s new headquarters near the Town Square and openings of two apartment buildings, The Russell and Quimby containing 228 new residences. Additional retailers to be announced in the coming months include restaurants and fitness offerings. Nearby retail includes the longtime Hillsdale Shopping Center, which is undergoing a massive renovation.
The pioneering transit-oriented development is well underway with nearly 1300 residents in townhomes and apartments, the Nueva School serving high school students, and visitors regularly utilizing Bay Meadows’ 18 acres of parks and open space. SurveyMonkey, the world’s leading online survey platform, recently leased the 210,000 square foot office building. The Class A office space is one of five planned at Bay Meadows, with another, Station 3, currently under construction and available for lease.
Matt Holmes and AJ Schrader of RetailWest represented the owner in the deal. Arthur Moretti of Creative Space represented Blue Bottle Coffee while Tin Pot Creamery was represented by Brian Bokman of Bokman Rock.
An ideally located community, Bay Meadows is only 10 minutes from Palo Alto, 20 minutes from San Francisco, and has 3 airports (SFO, OAK, SJC) within 30 miles. Bay Meadows is also located on Caltrain, which makes travel and commutes that much easier. Talk about convenient! Bay Meadows is the centralized place to reduce commutes, meet friends and play.
