San Mateo Among Cities Driving the Future

Each year, The Milken Institute publishes a report of America’s Best Performing Cities. This year, we’re excited to report that San Mateo was ranked along with the San Francisco/Redwood City Metro region at #3, a jump up from a #36 ranking in 2012.

The new rank is based on the boom in internet related technology and social media services, proving that a high-cost area can expand if it supports innovation and entrepreneurs.

And what better examples of this than San Mateo based businesses such as Marketo, SolarCity and RingCentral, all recently recognized for breakthrough successes in the areas of IPO, workplace environment and best new telecom products.

San Mateo is in good company. The San Jose, Sunnyvale, Santa Clara metropolitan area was ranked #4 and the Oakland, Fremont, Hayward area #92, a jump of 63 from 2012.

The Milken Institute sets out to objectively measure which US metro areas are promoting economic vitality. This is evaluated using job creation, retention, quality of life and other economic criteria.

Who took the number one spot? Austin/Round Rock/San Marco metropolitan area in Texas ranks #1 as it emerges as a technology center with the 13th largest technology output in the nation.

Next year? San Mateo #1!
