Caltrain Continues Critical Electrification Construction

To finish critical Electrification construction and testing in time to begin passenger service in 2024, Caltrain will be suspending rail service in select areas on weekends throughout the year. The next weekend shutdowns will be between Millbrae and Hillsdale stations on the weekends of March 25-26 and April 1-2. Riders should avoid Caltrain on the weekend and seek alternative transportation if they are planning to travel.

Bus bridge service will be available to Caltrain-dependent riders, but passengers should expect delays and longer travel times. Visit www.caltrain.com/status for the latest information about weekend impacts. Weekday service will not be impacted. Caltrain, a hub of public transportation on the peninsula and for Bay Meadows, is currently in the process of a major upgrade. The Caltrain Modernization Program (CalMod) will electrify and upgrade the performance, operating efficiency, capacity, safety and reliability of Caltrain’s commuter rail service. A key component to CalMod is the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP). Currently, Caltrains are diesel. The PCEP will change the trains to electric multiple unit trains for service between San Francisco and Tamien Station in San Jose.

There are several benefits of an electrification of Caltrain, most notably:

Improved regional air quality and reduce greenhouse gas emissions
Reduced engine noise emanating from trains
Improved train performance, increased ridership capacity and increased service
Increased revenue and reduce cost
