Tips to Keep Your Dog Safe this July 4

At Bay Meadows, we know your four-legged friends are family, and nothing matters more than keeping them safe and happy—especially during the excitement (and noise!) of the Fourth of July. While the holiday is full of fun for humans, it can be overwhelming for our pet family. A few simple steps can make a big difference for your dog’s comfort and well-being.

One of the best things you can do? Tire them out. Plan a long walk through Bay Meadows 18 acres of open space and neighborhood pathways or pop over to Landing Green Park for an extra game of fetch before the fireworks begin. San Mateo also has several wonderful dog-friendly parks and off-leash play areas nearby. Take a trip to Seal Point Park for waterfront views and wide open space, or visit the popular Laurie Meadows Dog Exercise Area for some off-leash play. Los Prados Park offers shaded strolls perfect for warm summer days. Beresford’s Chanteloup Field offers a three-acre off-leash dog area to blow off some energy, while Central Park features trails and grassy spots where your dog can relax before the evening excitement begins.

A well-exercised pup is more likely to feel relaxed once the sun goes down. You might even consider serving dinner and doing potty time earlier than usual so they’re settled in before things get loud.

Create a cozy retreat inside your home—think of it as a little doggie fort. Gather their favorite blankets, toys, and maybe even an old t-shirt that smells like you. This familiar setup offers a sense of safety when the outside world feels unpredictable. Play calming music or turn on a white noise app to help drown out the pops and booms.

Your presence matters. If possible, stay home with your pup and offer gentle reassurance. Snuggles, treats, or engaging toys like Kongs or puzzles can work wonders for distraction. If your dog has high anxiety, talk to your vet ahead of time about options like a Thundershirt or safe sedatives that can help take the edge off.

Here’s a handy recap to keep your dog safe and happy this Fourth:

  • Tire them out with playtime and a long walk
  • Plan for an earlier dinner and potty break
  • Set up a cozy hideaway with blankets and your scent
  • Use Kongs, puzzles, or calming music to distract
  • Stay home and comfort them
  • Ensure tags are on or pet is microchipped
  • Keep human food out of reach
  • Talk to your vet about anxiety support if needed

A good first impression is everything! Summertime means welcoming more guests to your residence, which can be overwhelming. Whether company is your coming for an evening barbeque, a weekend or a week, it’s important to ensure they feel right at home.

If you’re prepping for a weekend or longer, there is a lot that you can do to make their stay amazing, long before they ever step foot in your residence at Bay Meadows. Below is a quick checklist that’ll help you get started:

Keep the entry spacious for shoes and bags.

Bring on the citrus! Citrus, vanilla, and herbal scents like basil or rosemary the most widely favored scents. Ensure your home smells fresh with clean floors, linens, emptied trash, and candles.

Remove pet hair with a lint roller before guests arrive.

De-clutter! A clean space is appealing; clear surfaces, dust, and vacuum.

Ensure the bathroom has extra toilet paper, nice spray, soap, and clean hand towels ready.

Prepare a basket in a guest room anticipating any needs such as drinks, snacks, chargers, or sunscreen. You can also include one in the bathroom with shampoo, conditioner, body wash, face wash, and hang up an extra robe.

Provide a closet, hangers, side table, and luggage rack.

Include fresh linens, a clock, charger, trash can, and little extras like a chocolate or mint on the pillow like a fabulous 5-star turndown service.

Add fresh flowers, have your guest WiFi password available and grab a few of their favorite items for the most welcoming experience.

For weekend stays or longer, get a few gift cards to Blue Bottle, Fieldwork Brewing or a favorite restaurant or entertainment spot like Cinépolis Luxury Cinemas or Pinstripes Bowling at nearby Hillsdale Shopping Center so they can enjoy a walkable adventure on you! Stunning and Sunstainable, Hawthorne San Mateo uses Cross Laminated Timber

San Mateo’s Bay Meadows residential transit oriented development has been viewed as a model in sustainable development, just last year receiving an honorable mention from the Green Building awards, sponsored by groups such as Sustainable San Mateo County and Peninsula Clean Energy. The mix of neighborhood apartments, homes and townhomes sit right next to the Hillsdale Caltrain station, and18 acres extend living spaces with pocket parks, and ample bike and walk paths to enjoy more time outdoors. But sustainable design doesn’t stop at the master plan. Hawthorne has taken this concept to new heights!

At Hawthorne, cross laminated timber is visible in the top floor apartments and townhomes, which have beautiful exposed natural wood (European Spruce) ceilings. Additionally, the residences at Hawthorne enjoy a remarkable amount of natural light throughout the spaces, thanks to expansive windows and lofty ceiling heights that start at ~9’on the 4th floor and go up to ~10.5’ on additional floors with some soaring even higher in the townhomes. Adding to its sustainable design, Hawthorne is topped with rooftop solar panels.

To highlight the warm California Modern aesthetic, Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) and Mass Plywood panel (MPP) was strategically used throughout Hawthorne, and within bedroom ceilings and dens of Hawthorne’s four stand alone townhomes. Mechanical systems were coordinated to maximize the amount of exposed CLT to showcase the material, for both aesthetic reasons and to raise awareness of this high-quality material.

Hawthorne’s architectural design team worked with Scott MacLellan, the owner of Gurnet Point, a self-performing general contracting firm in the San Francisco Bay Area, to utilize Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) throughout the building and townhomes. Through the use of project modeling and prefabrication of I-joist floors and walls, MacLellan has helped build more than 1.5 million square feet of structures throughout the Bay Area. He was also involved in the erection of San Francisco’s first downtown CLT structure.

We caught up with Scott to learn more about this stunning and sustainable product used in the natural design at Hawthorne:

What’s driving the Mass Timber momentum in the Bay Area?

Mass Timber is gaining popularity due to the potential for environmental benefits and aesthetics.  As mass timber suppliers in Canada and the Pacific Northwest grow in capacity, they are looking to expand into other U.S. markets as the product becomes more mainstream.

What are some of the benefits of using Cross Laminated Timber in construction today?

CLT allows us to prefabricate the floor system, as opposed to using traditional joist or truss framing.  This makes the building much faster and safer to assemble, with parts that are manufactured off-site using very precise machining.

In what ways is Cross Laminated Timber an environmentally sound product?

CLT comes from a renewable raw material – wood – and it’s sourced from sustainable forests.  Cross Laminated Timber sequesters carbon, and uses fewer greenhouse gases in its manufacturing process than steel or concrete.

Explore the light-filled apartment homes full of natural wood accents and designer finishes all around. A boutique community, Hawthorne is the perfect spot to experience the smaller joys of life.

Just three blocks from Caltrain, Hawthorne is part of Bay Meadows Urban Village, a transit oriented development. With a strong connection to nature you’ll enjoy lots of natural light and greenery in the courtyard and adjacent parks, plus an immediate connection to natural wood elements used throughout its design. Bay Meadows is walkable, bikeable, and features plenty of open space for recreation; Hawthorne even has EV chargers and a secure bike room that opens up directly to outside, making it easier to actually use your bike.
