San Mateo’s GoPro Goes Big

“Think it. See it. Do it.” This is the opening line in a letter from Nicholas Woodman, Founder and CEO of GoPro. And GoPro is doing just that. Described as a group who has “passionate ideas about what’s possible in this world,” the GoPro team has created a camera that helps people capture thrilling and unique moments.

Based in San Mateo along with numerous start-ups and tech innovators, GoPro makes high-definition, pocket-sized video cameras. Creating a market that once primarily drew extreme sports enthusiasts, GoPro has widened its customer base to include everyone from hobbyists to the average Joe who wants to film himself, say, riding to work on his bike. The small weatherproof, mountable cameras have created a following and the numbers of uses for this adaptable camera are growing.

And GoPro is about to grow as well. On Monday, May 19th, the company filed its IPO and may raise $100 million. The filing on Monday showed GoPro’s 2013 revenue at $985 million, an increase of 87% from 2012. According to Forbes Magazine article, GoPro shipped 3.85 million units in 2013, up 66% from 2012.

“The vision now is to enable as many stoked consumers as possible with GoPro’s so they can document their lives and share it online,” says Woodman in The GoPro Story video. If its meteoric rise so far is any indication, the company will surely fulfill its vision.
