Outdoor Destinations for you and your dog!
Summer is here and with it comes outdoor adventures with your canine companion. If you find yourself looking to replace your regular outing with a new outdoor experience for you and your four-legged friend, we have complied a few bay-area locations which are both dog-friendly and scenic. Get a new destination on your calendar and get outdoors. Take your pick of these nearby spots:
Fort Funston, San Francisco
Fort Funston features 200 foot high sandy bluffs on San Francisco’s southwest coast and is one of the premier hang-gliding spots in the country. A network of trails make it ideal for hiking and horseback riding. Dog owners will be happy to know they can take leashes off here. It is also home to the Fort Funston Native Plant Nursery.
Mori Point, Pacifica
This popular spot comes with two miles of waterfront trails. Most dogs remain on leash while traversing the dirt trails, while others roam throughout the nearby beach. This coastline boasts strong currents, so it a good idea to limit pet play to the sand. Thanks to community volunteers, this coastal promontory has a 32-acre wetland park with trails, red-legged frog ponds, and a revived habitat for the San Francisco garter snake, once North America’s most endangered reptile.
Muscle Rock, Daly City
This location is one of the peninsula’s best-kept secrets. Rolling hills invite pet and human alike to explore the gravel paths, while experience breathtaking coastal views of the beach and bay. Just take a look at what one Yelper had to say about Muscle Rock.
This is one of Daly City’s beautiful gems! Mussel Rock Beach Park’s paths may be rather rocky at times, but even from the small parking lot, there are some unbelievable and gorgeous views of the beach and the bay. There are people who walk their dogs but it’s recommended that they be leashed at all times. – Paul N. on Yelp
Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail, Half Moon Bay
There is a reason the Ritz Carlton has a resort at this location given the beauty of the coast. A gorgeous coastline, well-manicured trails and an adjacent golf course add to the splendor of the setting. One Yelper did advise pet-owners to keep pets on leash and under control, especially on the trails. Although you often see dogs off-leash on the beach, the trail does require leashes. And now for the best part……parking is free at the Ritz.
Grab the pooch and head for these picturesque on and off-leash destinations just a short trip from Bay Meadows. And don’t forget to review all local laws regarding the site, to ensure a safe and carefree outing for you and your pet. Here’s a full round-up of places to go with Fido in tow within San Mateo County.
Pssst! Residents and friends of Bay Meadows are invited to join us every Thursday from 5-6pm for our new dog-friendly community event, “Twilight Tails”.
