DIG IT, Bring The Garden Indoors

Put simply: kids love to get their hands dirty. Take the garden indoors this season and enjoy the show! Bay Meadows residents have had some serious training in gardening with monthly classes led by the team at Homestead Design Collective in our very own Persimmon Park Community Garden. Now it’s time to put those skills to the test and share your knowledge with the whole family! Introducing your little ones to gardening is a great way to increase their awareness of where food comes from and the importance of the environment in everyday life, plus they will get their dirt fix.

Re-Grow Veggies. Show your children how easy it is to re-grow celery, onions and other veggies from scraps. Growing celery from the bottom of a bunch is one of the easiest and most satisfying projects to do with kids.

Mason Jar Terrarium. You can simply get a tiny plant, leave it in its tiny pot, rest it on the lid of the Mason jar, and then invert the glass over it and screw it shut.

Air Plant Terrarium Magnets. Decorate your refrigerator or any magnetic surface with these living magnets filled with air plants and moss.

Juice Box Planters. It’s fun to grow grass or other seeds in juice boxes because they grow so quickly. When your plants are ready for transplanting, you just cut the juice box open.

Sand Art Terrarium. Give terrariums a twist! Although sand art has been popular since the ’70s, it feels fresh and trendy when used with your favorite miniature houseplants.

Grow a Garden in an Eggshell. These eggshell planters are perfect for starting seeds! When the plants get too big for the shells, you can transplant them straight to the soil, shell and all. The kids can paint or draw faces on the eggshells and even give them names.

Countertop Herb Garden. Upcycle tin cans into a compact garden that will provide fresh herbs all year round.

Dino Planter. Transform plastic dinosaur figurines into quirky metallic succulent planters. There are lots of toys and other containers that are just perfect for turning into gardens, and kids will love coming up with ideas.

Cat Garden. Fill a ceramic pot with catnip, mint and other herbs your feline family member will love to snack on.

Indoor Fairy Garden. With a little glue, a few craft supplies and some potted plants, kids can create a beautiful indoor fairy garden that’s perfect for every season.

Felt Veggie Garden Box. If you just can’t handle the dirt under your nails, have fun making your own vegetable or flower garden from felt. Keep kids learning and having fun in the garden 365 days a year.
