Keeping the Kids Entertained Indoors…and Out
We’re lucky at Bay Meadows, just outside your front door you’ll find 18 acres of parks and green space (not to mention miles of biking) to burn off that energy and explore. That said, we’ve created a list of creative ways to keep your kids entertained while indoors too!
Activity Books
You probably have plenty of activity books you can round up in your home and car. If not, they are easy to order online for quick delivery including sticker books, coloring books, reusable stickers books, puzzle books, paint by number, dot to dot, and more. You can also print a plethora of activity sheets online including Mad Libs, math pages, word searches and more.
Scholastic Learn at Home
The educational company has launched a “Learn at Home” website that has daily courses for students from Pre-kindergarten to grades 6 and higher. From learning about why zebras have stripes to math lessons based on K-Pop stars, Scholastic covers a variety of topics.
Get Your Hands Dirty
Let’s be honest, kids love squishing things between their fingers. Pull out the Play-Doh or Kinetic sand and load up their senses. Mix things up and make your own playdough or slime.
Piece Together a Puzzle
Puzzles are such fantastic tools for kids learning plus they’re fun. They have the potential to keep kids—and adults entertained for hours. You can set-up a card table to serve as a puzzle station.
Channel Your Inner Artist
Never underestimate the power of markers, crayons, or paints to keep a child busy for long stretches of time. Pro tip: Use up your cardboard boxes from deliveries by crafting your own canvas or making postcards.
Build Away!
Magformers, MagnaTiles, Tinkertoys, Legos, or basic blocks can provide quite a few hours of fun. Get creative and try using Legos in a new way with these clever ideas including Lego faces and ring toss.
Get Geeky
Science can be fun, and a great way for kids to learn about how things work. You can fill days upon days with fun and easy experiments found online. They’ll love making elephant toothpaste, watching soap chase pepper away and watching popcorn kernels hop around. Get excited about science with former NASA engineer Mark Rober and his entertaining videos.
Make it a Movie Night
Whether it’s Netflix, Disney+, Hulu or Amazon Prime – pop some corn and binge watch some of your favorites with the family. Grab cozy throws, build a blanket fort, or gather up some cardboard boxes and make mini cars for your little movie-watchers.
Dance Party
Dancing it out to your kids’ favorite tunes is a fun way to spend an afternoon. Add a few decorations, yummy snacks and perfect playlist for a memorable dance party. You can also dance your way down to some of our Bay Meadows retailers and pick up to-go meals for dinner!
Get Cooking in the Kitchen
These fun cooking activities are a great way to keep kids busy — no TV or video games needed. The Kiddie Crunch Mix is a no-bake snack mix that they’ll love making and munching on.
Reading Under the Stars
Set up “camp” in your living room including a tent, sleeping bags, flashlights, and lanterns. For those of you lucky parents to have a planetarium style projector, nows the time! If not, turn an old shoebox into a smartophone projector to project the stars above! Bring piles of books, sport your jammies and start reading! Read to each other, read silently or listen to free audio books online. Make delish camping treats like donuts, s’mores and trail mix.
Break Out the Board Games
When you sit down to play a game with your family, you are building relationships, making space for important conversations, practicing all-important social skills, and you’re making memories. Here are some of the top 50 board games of all time.
