New Year, New Neighbors

We are very excited about the new venues which are calling San Mateo “Home”. Hone your skills to craft the perfect cocktail, raise a glass in a reservation only lounge, experience the old school hot towel treatment and dive into some popular Korean soups and stews.  Fogbird, Wunderbar, People’s Barber and Shop all have a presence in San Mateo and, from the look of the reviews being posted, people are loving the new additions. Also in the works is the popular Korean restaurant, Daeho Kalbijim & Beef Soup.

Fogbird
Located at 144 South B Street, Fogbird is a new lounge and cocktail company designed to be a place where people can gather, find joy and take a moment of respite with a craft cocktail in hand. They also offer fun, educational and spirited cocktail classes, both virtual and in-person.

We accidentally slipped in during the soft opening but couldn’t be more impressed. The ambience was great, cocktails were delicious, and the proximity to Caltrain is ideal for waiting out the next train. – Susan M.

We came to Fogbird’s early access after loving the owner’s previous restaurant around the corner, 31st Union. Fogbird is a lovely addition to San Mateo — delicious cocktails, yummy small bites, intimate ambiance, and friendly staff. Come check it out! – Christine H.

Wunderbar
Located at 310 Baldwin Avenue, Wunderbar is a reservation-only cocktail lounge located below Wursthall, the popular German-inspired beer hall. A San Mateo Daily Journal article also gave some insight.  Wunderbar General Manager Xian Choy said the space is a classy lounge area for people who want a more measured and leisurely experience instead of an overcrowded bar.

Great hidden gem in San Mateo downtown. Drinks and decor super on point. Highly recommend – Yayan L.

Really enjoy their riffs on classic cocktails. Ambiance is dark and moody, just like a speakeasy should be. Great addition to San Mateo. – Catherine H.

People’s Barber and Shop
Located at 318 2nd Avenue, Peoples Barber & Shops is a traditional men’s barbershop offering a full-service, luxury barber experience at a reasonable price. Patrons will experience services such as traditional shave, quality haircut or hot towel treatment.

Daniel does an amazing job whenever I visit him for a cut. He takes his time and fades my hair evenly. I’ll be continuing to go to Daniel as he has never disappointed me. – Ryan B.

My first experience at peoples barber was nothing short of perfection. Khadijah cut my hair and it turned out incredible. From the moment I walked thru the front door, she confidently told me that she knew exactly how to cut my hair. She cleaned me up exactly how I wanted and I couldn’t ask for more. I highly recommend her service.  The kindness, attention to detail and professionalism are all the more reason this place deserves 5 stars. – Thomas B.

Daeho Kalbijim & Beef Soup
Located at 213 2nd Avenue, the popular Korean restaurant will serve the same kalbijjim people wait over two hours for at Daeho in San Francisco and Milpitas. A San Francisco Chronicle article describes the proposed offerings even further. The braised beef rib stew, a hefty comfort food dish, is customizable with toppings like chewy rice cakes and a blanket of cheese torched table side. Daeho also serves beef and ox bone soups and bibimbap in stone pots. At San Mateo, they may add naengmyeon, a cold noodle soup, to the menu. Daeho San Mateo will offer indoor and outdoor dining, takeout and delivery.
